Losing

From Arab Democracy American-Style ... or How to Lose a 4th Generation War:

It is well established that Menachem Begin's Likud government of Israel helped to give birth to Hamas by giving it financial aid in the late 1970s in order to provide the Palestinians with a Islamic alternative that would offset and weaken the secular PLO. Israel's goal was to use a divide and conquer strategy to make it easier to control the Arab territories it grabbed in the 1967 war.

So Israel created its own Frankenstein monster. One would think religious fanatics would understand the psychology of religious fanatics, but one would be wrong. It takes a spectacular lack of insight to degenerate to such a state. I suppose it's par for the course for people who have some weird desire to live in another world. Perhaps, it has something to do with being a victim of historical forces. There needs to be some reason.

Taliban in Pakistan

According to Asia Times in The Taliban's bloody foothold in Pakistan, the Taliban is returning to its roots. The methods employed in Afghanistan are the same. Despised and feared criminals are publically executed. People will put up with almost anything rather than suffer murderous banditry. Hence, one way or another, we have order.

Outlet

Juan Cole's chronology of events concerning the Islamic Reaction to Danish Caricatures is interesting. Basically, various governments, particularity Egypt, are using a Western target as a means for relieving internal pressure. As I well know, rioting can serve as an outlet. However, in any event, the reaction is genuine, but without prompting it would probably have never reached this stage. It would have received far less attention.

Of course, these same methods are employed elsewhere.

Chains

In On War #150, William S. Lind makes the following point:

Osama bin Laden’s latest message. Most observers, including the White House, seem to have missed its significance. In it, bin Laden offered us a truce (an offer we should have accepted, if only to attempt to seize the moral high ground). The Koran requires Moslems to offer such a truce before they attack. The fact that bin Laden himself made the offer, after a long silence, suggests al Qaeda attaches high importance to it.

Meanwhile, Iran is ordering an end to UN Inspections.
