How Runaway Inflation Has Slipped Under the Radar. It's all in the statistics (or lack thereof). If you only look at prices for things like consumer electronics (which fall over time), then things look great. On the other hand, if you look at housing, education, fuel and food (in other words the things needed to live in a technological society), inflation means something else.

Vigilante Justice
When Iraqi Cops Go on a Rampage. Vigilante justice is not the hallmark of any viable state. As an entity, Iraq has been erased from the map. When will the Atlases make it official? Where will it happen next? When will it be here?

Create a U.S. foreign legion. At least it would be honest. There would be no pretense about it. Of course, the term legion implies empire.

Is Stupidity Receding
William S. Lind: Flickers of Light. Is stupidity receding? Too little, too late:
If we consider the operational and strategic situations in Iraq, we can easily see why no amount of tactical success can save us. Strategically, we are fighting to support a Shiite regime closely aligned with Iran, our most potent local opponent. Every tactical success merely moves us closer to giving Iran a new ally in the form of a restored Iraqi state under Shiite domination. The more tactical successes we win, the worse our strategic situation gets. This flows not from any tactical failure (though there have been plenty of those), but from botching the strategic level from the outset. Saddam's Iraq was the main regional counterweight to Iran, which means we should not have attacked it.When not alarmed at the potential spread of chaos and the destruction of the Iraqi state, the Ayatollahs must be laughing. Everybody loses; some lose worse.

Bush advisers ordered to testify. So many crimes, but it comes down to this? It's a lot like Al Capone being busted for tax evasion.

Connectivity
Global Guerrillas: JOURNAL: Connectivity Quicksand in Baghdad. More often than not, really stupid people seems to get promoted(and not just in the military by any means). Excerpt:
Again, the counter-insrugency strategy that Petraeus is using assumes that is possible to select a violent area, sweep it clean of insurgents, cordon it off, and then deliver political goods. This tidy formula works great with subsistence farmers that provide most of their own economic requirements. However, in a modern city replete with suburbs and infrastructure networks, the basics of daily life require ongoing connectivity to flows of people, goods, and services that course through the rest of the city. These flows open up the patchwork of "secured" areas (selected due to their levels of historical violence) to swarms of attacks along those numerous vectors of connectivity.Totally clueless. Perhaps the failing of the US military to understand cities is due to the fact that the Pentagon is located in the suburbs?

Dodgers
William S. Lind: The Washington Dodgers. He closes:
the conditioning be overcome? Will apathy prevail? The lowest common denominator must be abandoned. Can it? Only coupled with a massive economic crisis.
The likely result of all this Washington dodging is that events on the ground in Iraq and elsewhere will outrun the political process. That in turn means a systemic crisis, the abandonment of both parties by their bases and a possible left-right grass roots alliance against the corrupt and incompetent center. In that possibility may lie the nation's best hope. And in all likelyhood, its last hope. Can the left-right divide overcome the media hype which demonizes both through the eyes of the other? Can Americans stop behaving like Pavlov's dog? Can
